Cressing Temple Historic Garden & Hanningfield Reservoir and Wildlife Trust visit. 24-7-14

We recently had an enjoyable day trip to Cressing Temple, an ancient medieval moated farmstead with a fascinating range of rural barns and artefacts, and two vast oak barns built during the 13th century for the Knights Templar. It also featured a 16th century garden which was of particular interest to many of our members.

We then travelled to Hanningfield reservoir for a brief visit to the wildlife trust where a number of us enjoyed a long walk through the welcome shade of the surrounding woodland, taking in the bird hides, ponds and views across the reservoir.

Afternoon Tea & Open Garden

Growing Together in Westcliff hosted an Afternoon Tea for 22 visitors on Wednesday 9th July, attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Southend.

The event was in aid of Southend Community Fund and supported us in its fundraising efforts.

Visitors enjoyed sandwiches made by our patron Jill Allen-King OBE and volunteers and members made cakes, scones and prepared strawberries. The event raised more than £300 for local charities.

The Afternoon Tea provided an opportunity for the visitors to tour the garden, which now has 6 chickens in addition to the beehives. The herbaceous border has just been completed and is looking stunning and the vegetables are very productive, with courgettes, chard, raspberries and beans in season

Trust Links provides social and therapeutic gardening for adults with mental health problems at the two Growing Together gardens in Westcliff and Shoeburyness. Trust Links also works with local schools, youth groups and is setting up a new Women’s Only group

Lions Sports Day 2014

We once again entered a team in the Lions 7 a side football tournament, part of the annual Leigh Lions Disabled Sports Day, defending our crown. With five teams participating this year we had a great day and met a lot of old and new friends. Unfortunately our fortunes on the pitch were not as successful as last year - we were unable to score a goal! - and we finished bottom of the group.

(We're in good company - World Cup holders Spain were knocked out of this year's competition in the first round!)

The weather held off for a fantastic May Fayre on Saturday, making more than £400 for Trust Links. Growing Together was very busy with maypole dancing, local folk band Slow Loris, Elusive Dance doing an impressive range of street dancing, East Essex Smallholders Group brought a sheep and baby lamb, newborn chicks and produce for sale and our kitchen was busy with ploughmans lunches and cakes. Thank you to everybody that came along and supported the event!
